that crappy little house?

Before we bought our house, we lived with Jason's parents just a few miles away. We were there for about 9 months, so I went to their ward playgroup and got to know some people. After we made our offer on this house, I was telling some of the other moms about it, and one of them realized that her in-laws live on my street; she asked which house we made an offer on. When I told her the one on the corner, she said "Oh, that crappy little house?"
I didn't know what to say. Why would you say that to someone who was hoping to buy the house in question? I love our house dearly and could never think of it as a crappy little house.
However, it was empty for over a year before we bought it, a year during which the yard was completely neglected. To give you an idea, we moved in in February and when the snow melted a month later, we discovered a layer of dead leaves carpeting the lawn. So our lawn, especially in back, was mostly dead. There were also dead trees, overgrown bushes that infringed on the front steps, rose bushes engulfed in weeds... it's taken a lot of work, but I'm pretty happy with how our yard is looking now.
Except for the lawn.
Try as we might, we can't seem to get a nice lawn going. We've seeded, fertilized, aerated, weed 'n feeded, and crawled around on our hands and knees pulling dandelions (I filled six garbage bags last summer. With just dandelions.) What are we doing wrong??

I don't think it's just you. Come look at our yard.

Try adding organic things to it. Avoid the chemicals. You can try compost tea (if u make it yourself it won't be too pricey...) and try manure. It will smell, but it fades. Sphagnum peat moss would be good. Think organic. The dirt is probably lacking in nutrients for a lawn to grow. And btw- when they see how much better your house looks, they will choke on their words. ;0)

I have no lawn advice, but feel bad that she called your home "that crappy little house"
